Hala StompBox vs. SOL Switchblade: A Retractable Fin Showdown

People ask us how the StompBox compares to the SOL Switchblade, the other retractable center fin you'll find on river SUPs. Fair question. We bought one, put both systems on the bench, and compared them part by part. Here's the comparison up front. The full story is below it.

Our verdict (yes, we're biased, so check our work)

For river performance in surfing, ferrying, tracking through current, and confidence in the shallows, active downward pressure, full retraction, and a flush, rigid fit are not small differences. They are the difference between a fin that holds and a fin that hopes. Both systems come apart with basic tools. Put them side by side, push on the fins, and look at what holds each one together. The engineering speaks for itself.

Why retractable fins exist

A full-size center fin gives a river SUP tracking, drive, and stability. It is also what stops your board dead in moving water (and sends you flying over the nose) when the fin catches a rock. A retractable fin promises both: full-fin performance in deep water, and automatic retraction when you hit something, so the board keeps moving and you keep standing. Both the StompBox and the Switchblade chase that promise. They get there very differently.

Inside the StompBox 2.5

The Hala StompBox is patented (US Patent 10,046,836) and has been continuously refined since 2015. It is a machined fin box with a twin-spring system that applies active downward pressure to a full 9" fin. The springs hold the fin at full depth through current, boils, and turbulence. Hit a rock and the entire 9" fin retracts fully into the box, with nothing left hanging below the hull, then springs back to full depth before your next stroke.

The StompBox 2.5 Kit comes fully assembled. It is made up of six components that are also sold as individual spare parts should you ever need them: fin box, cover, 9" SpringFin, center spring, spacer, and screws. The whole system is a $99 kit that swaps in minutes.

Inside the Switchblade

The Switchblade takes a simpler approach. The housing accepts any US-style fin box fin, which is a real compatibility perk, and the fin is held by a tension band (a rubber band), with a racquetball as the retention mechanism. The hold-down force is passive: no spring drives the fin toward full depth. The included fin mounts screw-first, which places the retention screw at the fin's leading edge, the first point of impact.

Retraction is where the geometry catches up with it. On impact the fin rotates back in the housing rather than retracting into the board, and how far it gets depends on fin length. The 8" fin on our test unit contacts the housing before it can tuck away, so part of it still sits below the hull. Shorter fins can rotate further out of the way, at the cost of the tracking a full-size fin exists to provide. That trade is the tell: the StompBox fully retracts a 9" fin; the Switchblade could not fully retract the 8" fin it came with.

What their own display says

SOL's in-store dealer display makes the pitch with two icons: a crossed-out screw and a crossed-out spring. No screws, no springs, presented as selling points. We read it differently. There is a screw in the system, and on the included fin it rides at the leading edge, right where rocks hit. And no springs means exactly what it says: nothing actively holds the fin down. The bench results above are what those two icons mean in practice.

A word on simplicity

The Switchblade is a simple system, and simple has its appeal. But simplicity is sometimes a lack of attention to the details that create value. The StompBox has more parts because every one of them earns its place, and the payoff is its own kind of simplicity: a fin you never have to think about while you paddle. It arrives fully assembled, every component is sold as a spare, and fixes take minutes and can be done shore-side.
