Construction and Materials
Hala inflatable SUPs are engineered from the ground up for real-world performance. Every material choice and construction method has a specific reason behind it — tested on real rivers, not just validated in a factory.
Two Drop-Stitch Constructions, Two Purposes
Hala uses different drop-stitch core materials depending on what a board is built to do:
| Construction | Used On | Characteristics | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fusion Drop-Stitch | Charge Series, Adventure Series | Heavier, extremely impact-resistant, rigid under load | River boards take rock hits, drops, and sustained abuse — the extra weight buys durability where it counts |
| Woven Drop-Stitch | Cruise Series (Hoss, Straight Up) | Noticeably lighter, still durable, rigid at pressure | Flatwater boards don't need rock-impact resistance — woven construction saves meaningful weight while keeping the board stiff and long-lasting |
Fusion Drop-Stitch — River Boards
The Charge and Adventure Series boards use a Fusion Drop-Stitch core: thousands of high-tension polyester threads bonded between two UV-stabilized PVC skins at the raw material stage, before the board is shaped. When inflated to 15–18 PSI, this creates a board that's rigid, extremely resilient, and built to absorb rock contact. Fusion bonding differs from cheaper laminated construction — the materials are melded at the manufacturing stage, creating tighter tolerances and better long-term durability.
Woven Drop-Stitch — Cruise Series
The Hoss and Straight Up use a woven drop-stitch core — lighter in hand and noticeably easier to carry, while retaining the rigidity and durability you'd expect from a Hala board. At 15–18 PSI the board performs like a hardboard, but the weight savings make a real difference on the walk from the car to the water. Built tough enough to last — just not over-engineered for conditions that don't require it.
Glued and Welded Rail Construction
All Hala boards — river and flatwater — are built with rails bonded using both adhesive and heat welding. The glue and weld together create a bond at the rail that's stronger than the surrounding material. This is the primary reason we offer our 5-Year Warranty. Lower-cost boards use glue-only rail construction, which separates over time. Hala rails don't.
StompBox 2.5: The Patented River Fin System
The StompBox 2.5 is Hala's patented retractable fin system. Unlike gravity-based retractable fins that bounce in current, the StompBox uses active downward spring pressure to keep the center fin locked at full deployment. It deflects cleanly off rocks and snaps back to full depth before your next stroke. Zero wobble. Zero tracking loss mid-rapid. US Patent 10,046,836. Standard on all Hala river boards: Atcha 96, Atcha 86, Rado, and Radito.
Materials Reference
| Component | Material | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| River board cores | Fusion Drop-Stitch, UV-stabilized PVC | Maximum impact resistance and rigidity for whitewater conditions |
| Flatwater board cores | Woven Drop-Stitch, UV-stabilized PVC | Lighter carry weight, still rigid and durable for flatwater and light river use |
| Rails (all boards) | Glued and heat-welded PVC | Strongest available seam — will not separate under normal use |
| D-rings (deck) | Soft webbing D-rings bonded to board surface | Equal strength to metal for rigging; no hard edges to land on during a fall |
| D-ring (tail leash point) | Stainless steel | Rated for dynamic leash loads; corrosion-resistant in fresh and salt water |
| Fin box hardware | Stainless steel | Corrosion-resistant in fresh and salt water |
| Deck pad | EVA foam, diamond-groove texture, full-length | Grip when wet, extends to rails on river boards for knee bracing |
| Valve | High-pressure Halkey-Roberts | Compatible with any pump; field-repairable; inflates to 15–18 PSI |
A Note on Marketing Buzzwords
“Military-grade PVC” is not a real material standard — there is no specification that defines it, and it was adopted as marketing language early in the inflatable SUP industry. Hala uses UV-stabilized, high-quality PVC tested for puncture resistance and durability in river and UV-heavy outdoor conditions. We'll tell you what's actually in the board and why it matters rather than use terms that sound authoritative but measure nothing.

Woven Dropstich
To make our lightest boards more rigid without adding stringers, the Hoss and Straight Up use a premium woven ropstitch core material. This material is durable, lightweight, and rigid, meaning your all-water board is ready for anything.
We've thoroughly tested materials and construction methods and found the perfect combination of lightweight durability and premium construction. Our Thick Fusion Construction + Welded Bonded Rails make lighter, more durable inflatable SUPs (and allow us to extend our warranty). Find out more below.
Hala Gear
The rigidity of a hard board
Our boards are lighter and more rigid than ever before!
Hala designs gear for people who demand a lot from their equipment, so our SUPs are as lightweight as they are durable.

beefed up for sup
Thick Fusion Construction™
We use a Fusion construction and the most innovative material for a lighter and more durable board. Hala SUPs use our new unparalleled stacking + bonding
process, to create a tougher board that lasts longer and is more sustainable for the planet and your wallet.
THICK FUSION CONSTRUCTION
is our high-end, multi-coated Fusion Drop Stitch, that makes our river
boards lighter and just as durable. Each board is constructed to withstand drops, rocks, and roof racks. Our thicker, more robust fusion creates abrasion-resistant boards that can withstand any environment. We were able to use less material by utilizing a new manufacturing technology that lends itself to lightweight and highly durable boards.

Third Seal Bonds
Hala Gear glues and welds the seams on every SUP board. Glue alone will deteriorate over time, so we added a third WELDED SEAM. Welding, a mechanical type of bonding, provides longevity and durability that stands the test of time and temperature for years. You can trust your Hala Gear SUP, because we don't cut corners on any aspect of the board.
